## What is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction in which a carboxyl group (–COOH) is released as carbon dioxide (CO₂). In hemp, this applies to the acid forms of cannabinoids: cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is converted into cannabidiol (CBD). The reaction is driven primarily by heat, but also occurs slowly at room temperature over time.

## CBDA and CBD — the same molecule in two forms

In the freshly harvested hemp plant, cannabinoids exist almost exclusively in their acid form, i.e. as CBDA, not CBD. CBD is only formed once CBDA loses its carboxyl group. So these are not two fundamentally separate substances, but the same molecule before and after decarboxylation.

## What heat does to CBDA

The higher the temperature, the faster the conversion. At room temperature it occurs slowly during storage; when heated — for example during extraction, often in the range of around 100–150 °C — it proceeds considerably faster. This is why extracted and heated hemp products are dominated by CBD, whereas unheated, dried hemp retains more CBDA.
