CBD is not intoxicating. THC is the compound that produces a high, and the two are different molecules even though they share the same chemical formula. In the fresh plant there is almost no CBD at all. What sits there instead is the acid form, CBDA, which turns into CBD only when the material is heated. CBD is found in the flower and the leaves, not in the seed. Here is the full picture, without health claims, because we are not allowed to make any, and further down we explain why.\n\n## What does CBD stand for?\n\nCBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol. The World Health Organization's Expert Committee on Drug Dependence describes the substance in its [critical review of June 2018](https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/controlled-substances/whocbdreportmay2018-2.pdf) as a 21-carbon terpenophenolic compound formed following decarboxylation from a cannabidiolic acid precursor. The molecular formula is C21H30O2.\n\nThe compound is not new. Cannabidiol was isolated as early as 1940 by Roger Adams and his colleagues, in a [paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society](https://doi.org/10.1021/ja01858a058), but its structure could not be determined at the time. That came in 1963, when Raphael Mechoulam and Yehiel Shvo published [their analysis in Tetrahedron](https://doi.org/10.1016/0040-4020(63)85022-x). The chemistry had therefore been fully described for a good sixty years before CBD became a consumer product.\n\nIf you want the whole family of related compounds in one place, they are in our overview of [cannabinoids: CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN and THC](/kunskap/vad-ar-cannabinoider).\n\n## CBD and CBDA are not the same molecule\n\nThis is the most common misunderstanding about hemp. A living, freshly harvested plant contains hardly any CBD. What sits there instead is **CBDA**, cannabidiolic acid, which is CBD with an extra carboxyl group. When the material is heated, that group leaves as carbon dioxide and CBDA becomes CBD. The process is called decarboxylation.\n\nThis means a product can contain a great deal of cannabidiolic acid and almost no cannabidiol, or the reverse, depending on whether the raw material has been heated. Unheated raw hemp keeps its CBDA. They are structural isomers, built from exactly the same atoms but connected differently. That difference is decisive. THC has a closed ring structure that lets the molecule bind strongly to the body's CB1 receptors, which produces the high. CBD has an open structure and does not bind in the same way.\n\nThe WHO review from 2018 states that in humans, cannabidiol exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential, that the substance is generally well tolerated, and that at the time of the report no public health problems had been associated with pure CBD. In the animal studies described in the same report, CBD also failed to substitute for THC in what are known as drug discrimination models, a standard test of whether two substances are experienced alike.\n\nThat CBD is not intoxicating does not mean every CBD product is free of THC. Full spectrum products contain the plant's other cannabinoids, THC included, and that detail is precisely what determines legality in Sweden. If you are tested at work, the question of [hemp and drug tests](/kunskap/kan-hampa-ge-utslag-pa-drogtest) is worth reading separately.\n\n## Where in the hemp plant is CBD found?\n\nCBD forms in the plant's trichomes, the resin glands that sit most densely on the flower heads and to a lesser extent on the leaves. Stalk and root contain negligible amounts. **The seed contains no CBD at all.**\n\nThat last point explains a confusion that keeps recurring on the shelf. Hemp seed oil, listed on ingredient labels as *Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil*, is pressed from the seed and contains no cannabinoids to speak of. It is a source of fat, not a CBD product. Light, temperature and season length all play a part, something we have written about in [the Nordic climate advantage](/kunskap/nordens-klimatfordel-cbda) and in our [overview of terpenes in hemp](/kunskap/vad-ar-terpener-i-hampa).\n\n## Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate\n\nThree words describing how much of the plant remains in the finished product:\n\n- **Full spectrum:** the entire cannabinoid profile remains, including trace amounts of THC.\n\n- **Broad spectrum:** several cannabinoids remain but THC has been removed.\n\n- **Isolate:** purified CBD, in practice a white crystalline powder without the other plant compounds.\n\nIn Sweden the choice between them is not only a matter of preference, it is partly a legal question. Extracted full spectrum oils containing THC are assessed as narcotics, and CBD extract is not yet authorised as a food in the EU. Unheated raw hemp below the THC threshold and products made from hemp seed are permitted.\n\nThis question carries enough exceptions to deserve its own article, and we have two: [Is CBD legal in Sweden? An overview of the market is in [CBD in Sweden 2026](/kunskap/cbd-sverige-2026-marknad-regelverk).\n\n## Why you will not find any health claims here\n\nSearch for CBD and you will meet claims about almost everything. We make none, and that is not caution but law.\n\nIn the EU, nutrition and health claims about food are governed by Regulation 1924/2006. A health claim may only be used if it appears on the Union list of authorised claims. For cannabidiol, no authorised health claim exists. It therefore makes no difference what individual studies may suggest, a company selling the product still may not say it.\n\nTwo further things are worth knowing. EFSA, the EU's food safety authority, published in [February 2026 a provisional safe intake level for CBD](https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/provisional-safe-level-cannabidiol-novel-food) of 0.0275 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day, roughly 2 milligrams per day for a 70 kg adult. A safety level is not an authorisation, and novel food applications are still assessed one by one.\n\nAnd purified cannabidiol does exist as an authorised medicine in the EU. Epidyolex received marketing authorisation on 19 September 2019 and is [prescription-only according to the European Medicines Agency](https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/human/EPAR/epidyolex), indicated for certain rare forms of epilepsy and started under medical supervision. That is a different product category, at a different dose, with a different legal status from anything sold as a consumer product. Confusing the two is precisely what prompts the Swedish Medical Products Agency to intervene.\n\n## How to check what is actually in a product\n\nSince marketing says little, the certificate of analysis is the only thing that says anything. A COA from an independent laboratory shows the actual cannabinoid profile of that specific batch, meaning how much CBD, CBDA and THC were measured.\n\nThree things are worth looking for: that the certificate covers the same batch as the product in front of you, that the laboratory is independent of the seller, and that the THC content is reported separately rather than hidden inside a total.
