In early June, the hemp is planted out in Gotland's soil. Now, as the longest days of the year approach, the plants take hold — rooted in lime-rich earth and carried by the Nordic light. Here we take a closer look at the hemp growing season on Gotland, why this particular island yields a distinctive raw material, and what's happening in the fields at this time of year.
When is hemp planted on Gotland?
Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is planted out on Gotland in early June, once the soil has warmed and the risk of night frost has passed. Through high summer the plants grow quickly — hemp is among the plants that gain the most momentum during the brightest weeks around midsummer, when Gotland has the most daylight. Harvest comes later in the season, towards late summer and early autumn, depending on whether seed or flower is to be taken.
Why Gotland?
Gotland rests on a bedrock of limestone — one of Sweden's most geologically distinctive landscapes. The lime-rich, well-drained soil, together with a mild coastal climate and long bright summer days, creates conditions that differ from the mainland. It is this raw material — hemp grown on Gotland — that Helsama refines further.
A plant that fends for itself
Hemp is known as a hardy crop. It is usually grown without pesticides, grows densely and outcompetes weeds on its own. Its deep root system loosens the soil, and the crop is often part of crop rotation, leaving the ground in good condition for the next planting.
Seed and flower — two parts of the same plant
Hemp's seed and flower are used in different ways and come from different varieties, grown in separate fields:
- Hemp seed — small, nutrient-dense kernels harvested when the plant has matured.
- Flower powder — powder made from the hemp flower, Helsama's Premium CBD Hemp.
From soil to you
What Helsama does begins in the earth and the season. The hemp planted out on Gotland now becomes, after harvest and refining, the products we offer. The patience to wait for the right moment to harvest is part of the craft.
